Families of individuals in crisis are speaking out about the handling of mental health calls. Data shows that more than half of these calls were not handled by specialized mental health teams. Instead, regular patrol officers or other police units responded to 54% of mental health calls.

City officials have a protocol in place for handling mental health calls, which involves dispatching specialized teams like SA-CORE and the Mental Health Unit. However, the data suggests that these teams are not being utilized for the majority of calls.

Further information on this issue is available, including a presentation made to the Public Safety Committee in January.
