A total of 72 people have been arrested for suspected involvement in starting forest and peatland fires. These fires have triggered a harmful cloud of haze. The country's dry season and an intensifying El Nino pattern are driving the fires, which have generated dense smoke.

The smoke has crossed into neighboring Malaysia. Fires are a common issue, often caused by plantation owners and farmers clearing land. The arrested individuals are being investigated in connection with 89 fire cases.

Further details about the arrests and the ongoing fire situation are available from the National Disaster Management Agency, or BNPB, and other sources.
