A powerful earthquake struck southwestern Japan, causing widespread damage and loss of life. 1, hit the Kumamoto area on the southern main island of Kyushu. At least 23 people have been killed and 63 injured, with five of those injuries being serious.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, but time is running out to find survivors. Thousands of people have been forced to spend the night at evacuation centers. The full extent of the damage and the number of people missing is not yet clear.
