A recent analysis found that deaths from ectopic pregnancies have nearly doubled. This increase is particularly pronounced in states with abortion bans, such as Texas. Ectopic pregnancies occur when a pregnancy fails to implant in the uterus and develops elsewhere, often in a fallopian tube, leading to catastrophic bleeding if left untreated.
The analysis, which examined data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, revealed a significant spike in deaths from 2020 to 2025, with almost 200 women dying from the condition. This is compared to about 100 deaths in the previous period.
Further details on this trend are available from the original report by ProPublica.
